Last Night in Deer Park
[Deer Park, August 31, 2009]

Sitting beside the campfire, moon rising
To send a gleam-stream shimmering our way
While hot dogs blacken on fresh-cut green sticks,
The black dog invisible at night time,
Bear bell collar betraying his begging.
Somewhere west a kingfisher and sand-hills,
Nighthawks patrolling the moonlit sky for
Skeeties, other unsuspecting morsels.
Ma coyote cross the lake calls pups.
I wonder if God created victims
With no regard for exempting humans.
Bonnie today delivered dog-shit
On a cold shovel, a sharp reminder
That even out here civilization
Nibbles toward us as waves pound beaches
A quarter-mile northward, eating at them,
Battle sounds that turn white over time
As do the feces of all God’s critters.
We end another Deer Park interlude
With cabernet poured by bright starlight,
Alcohol the perfect tonic to meld
Minds with flame and banish aberrant though.
