No Joy in Joy

Hooked up to wires, tape trodes
Monitor blinking, beeping
Like a Roadrunner cartoon
Sometimes the sound like Pacman
(the old version of back-when )
here by life’s dance we call chance
blocking the store’s beer cooler
on my keester before noon
slumped dizzily by books
(ironically my own).
The meatwagon took me town
To Joy as in hospital
Helen Newberry Joy
To spend my day as years back
Being tested, front and back
The diagnosis coming in
Labrynthitis, inner ear
Malfunction, a viral deal
A no joy-in war parlance.
Thankfully not the Big Bogey
Taker of Lives, genetic
Beast, lifestyle pay-up, Death Dude.
Phew.
