National Symbols. Crawford County. 2006. 36 x 42 in, acrylic on canvas. CO John Huspen of Crawford County was called in to help capture a mature female bald eagle who had been injured. Everything looks serene in the painting, but I tried to capture a bit of anxiety on John's face. Seconds before the eagle turned and tried to put her beak into his eyes. John is a former wrestler and what one of Larry McMurtry's characters might call a stout man, but he was using all the strength he had to hold this eagle. Alas, the eagle passed away after getting care -- natural causes. She was losing her sight.
