[Deer Park, Luce County, MI,
August 6, 2009]
The bird sings Do-you-want-me-
To-make-you-tea? From cedars.
The loon yodels recklessly.
Coyotes across the lake
Bark unison cadences.
Suckers, Blind and Dead, Two Hearts
Sing therapeutically.
Upper Lake, Superior,
Uses waves to animate stones
Make them chirrup like crickets.
Wind out of the northwest bends
Forests, whistles across dunes.
Our last campfire cracks piney
Under the rising full moon.
We’ve been a month in the north woods
Without the bells and whistles,
Alleged modernity,
Televisions, computers,
Lawn-mowing devices,
Or the need for any such-like,
Just water, wind, mammalia,
And insects flying, crawling,
Summertime reduction,
Lake and life alm at sunrise.
