[Portage, April 23, 2010]
Lush forest surrounds us here,
Yet birds and rodents alike
Hang on suet cakes in wire cages
Interspecial proof of welfare’s
Ultimate magnetics,
Or is it luxury calling?
If suet withdrawn,
Do dependents die or suffer
Or go back to pre-luxury
Standards, getting along
On nature’s bounty alone?
Absent man’s well intentioned acts
Is suet hung to feed creatures
Or entertain the hangers?
If meant as food, why place
Offerings in comfortable view?
Suet hung unseen in the forest would
Nurture equally well.
Jesus, we are assured by texts and claims
Fed the assembled multitudes
As if they were backyard birds.
Was His act for sustenance,
Or His personal amusement?
We men are selfish creatures
Fashioned in God’s image.
Answer either yes or no.
